Project Utopia

Grab your eye patch and fluffy white cat – the perfect criminal mastermind’s hideout is here at last.

Who hasn’t dreamt of owning a private space-age island on which to hatch plans of world domination? What’s that? You haven’t? Well it’s time you did, because someone’s finally designed one.

Budding Dr. Evils can now feast their eyes on Project Utopia, a vision of future artificial island living conceived by BMT Nigel Gee in partnership with Yacht Island Design.

100 metres in circumference and spanning over 11 decks, Project Utopia has the equivalent volume of a modern cruise liner, with enough space, according to its creators, to accommodate an entire micro nation (or evil empire). The design is based on a four-legged platform with a small waterplane area, for minimum motion in even the most extreme sea conditions.

Each leg supports a 360-degree directional thruster, so the structure can redeploy to different locations at slow speeds. A large central structure bisects the water surface, acting as the conduit for the mooring system, as well as housing a wet dock for tender access.

The uppermost deck is covered by a retractable canopy, and on summit, 65 metres above sea level, there is an observatory with all-round panoramic views - ideal for keeping a lookout for incoming MI6 agents.

James Roy, Yacht Design Director at BMT Nigel Gee, says Project Utopia is all about rethinking the boundaries of traditional yacht design:

“Much is made in today’s design community of starting with a blank sheet of paper yet many, if not all yacht concepts revert back to the traditional form - the perception that a yacht should be a form of transport becomes an immediate constraint. Utopia is not an object to travel in, it is a place to be, an island established for anyone who has the vision to create such a place.”

Mr. Roy doesn’t mention how much aspiring Dr. Evils will have to pay to get their hands on their own Project Utopia - but we’re guessing it to be in the region of one meeeeellion dollars.
